“Ratti” (or Ratt) is an old unit of weight used in South Asia, mostly for gemstones and jewelry. It comes from the small red Gunja seed, which was used long ago to measure weight because every seed was about the same size. One ratti is around 0.12 grams. Even though people now use grams or carats, some jewelers and astrologers still use rattis out of tradition.

For example, if a gemstone balanced with five Gunja seeds, it was said to weigh five rattis. This method was surprisingly accurate for its time and became a standard way to weigh precious items like gold, silver, and gemstones across ancient India.

What is a carat?

A carat is just a way to measure how heavy a gemstone is — kind of like using kilograms for people, but much smaller. One carat equals 0.2 grams, about the weight of a small paperclip. The word comes from carob seeds, which were once used for weighing gems because every seed was almost the same size. So, when someone says a diamond is “1 carat,” they mean it weighs about 0.2 grams — a tiny amount, but a big deal in jewelry!
